Rockstar Says GTA 6 PS5 Box Codes Are Region-Locked

Rockstar has confirmed that PlayStation 5 codes for Grand Theft Auto 6 will be region-locked, requiring redemption with a PlayStation account registered in an approved country. The move could complicate purchases of the game’s physical “code-in-the-box” edition, where buyers may end up with a code that doesn’t match their account region.

PS5 Region-Locks Apply to Physical Box Codes, Not Xbox

Rockstar’s support information states that redemption restrictions apply to Grand Theft Auto 6 on PS5. Players must use a PlayStation account registered in a specific country to redeem certain region codes.

Notably, the same policy does not carry over to the Xbox version: Xbox Series X|S codes for GTA 6 have no region-lock restrictions.

Japan Digital Codes Expire 170 Days After Issuance

Rockstar also flagged a Japan-specific restriction for digital codes. It says that “product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date,” but the company did not clarify what the expiration covers.

Some players interpret the deadline as applying only to pre-order add-ons or DLC included with the package. Others have speculated it could potentially apply to access to the base game itself, which would mean players who do not redeem in time could lose access to the content.

Rockstar has not added further detail on how the expiration works, but it states the timing is “due to regional regulations.”

What This Means for Buyers of the Physical Edition

Because PlayStation Store purchases typically align with a player’s account region automatically, region-locked codes are primarily a concern for buyers using physical “code-in-the-box” editions. Rockstar warns that if the code’s region does not match the user’s PlayStation account region, the code may not be usable.

Rockstar’s warning implies affected players could need to change their account region or create a new PlayStation account to redeem the code. For people who haven’t pre-ordered yet, buying from a local retailer is presented as the safest approach since those sellers typically stock region-appropriate products.
