Simon Mignolet has moved into a senior management role with the Belgian Football Association after ending his playing career, working closely with Belgium coach Mark van Bommel on the national team’s sporting direction and youth development.

The former Liverpool and Club Brugge goalkeeper, now 38, has taken on a role designed to connect federation planning with the realities of the pitch. He has also been seen alongside Van Bommel at Belgian domestic matches as the pair assess potential talent.

Van Bommel has welcomed the former Belgium international’s growing involvement around the Red Devils setup, particularly his knowledge of current player environments and dressing-room issues.

Mignolet is not involved in picking the team or imposing tactical decisions, but has become a key figure for discussion within the coach’s wider staff structure.

“I’m pleased to have someone with his sporting experience near me,” Van Bommel said. “He has only recently stopped playing, so naturally we speak a lot about football — specific situations and conversations we have with the squad.”
