Spain have released Nico Williams from their training camp after the Athletic Club winger suffered a muscle injury in his left thigh.

Williams reported discomfort after Spain’s 4-1 Nations League win over Croatia in Seville. He was unable to join Thursday’s session, and further checks during the squad’s rest period confirmed he could not continue in the camp.

Quick facts

  • Williams has left Spain with a left-thigh muscle problem.
  • He scored in 22 minutes off the bench against Croatia.
  • The 22-year-old had previously played 55 minutes in the 3-2 win over England at Wembley.
  • Spain lead Nations League League A Group 3 with six points from two games.
  • Eric Garcia and Alejandro Grimaldo have also withdrawn during this international window.

The winger will return to Athletic Club, whose medical department was kept informed throughout Spain’s assessment. He will continue treatment and rehabilitation under the supervision of his club.

His departure removes another attacking option for Luis de la Fuente ahead of Saturday’s home match against Czechia in Oviedo. Spain then travel to Croatia on Tuesday for their final fixture of the current break.

Williams has seven goals in 38 caps for La Roja. His pace and threat from wide areas had been a key feature of Spain’s opening two victories, including the comeback success over England and the emphatic Croatia result.

Spain have made a perfect start to the group, sitting three points clear of England and Croatia, who are separated by goal difference. Czechia are bottom without a point.

Garcia had already been ruled out with a problem in his left knee, while Grimaldo left the squad with a muscular complaint. Spain will complete the remaining two Group 3 matches in November.
