Tzolis Sets Up Kourbelis as Greece Shock Germany in Augsburg

Christos Tzolis created Dimitris Kourbelis’ 74th-minute goal as Greece stunned Germany 1-0 in Augsburg, extending their perfect start at the top of Group A.

The Club Brugge winger delivered the defining action on the left, twisting away from his marker before finding Kourbelis, who beat Germany goalkeeper Alexander Nubel with the finish.

It was Greece’s second major away success in succession after their victory over England at Wembley. Ivan Jovanovic’s side now return home with momentum building ahead of Thursday’s Nations League meeting with the Netherlands at Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki.

Tzolis hails Greece’s composure

Tzolis said Greece remained calm despite long spells of German possession and trusted that opportunities would come on the break. Fotis Ioannidis had missed a significant opening earlier in the second half, but the visitors did not allow that setback to disrupt their defensive discipline.

“It is an incredible feeling,” Tzolis said. “We have won two difficult away matches against opponents of huge quality. Germany had control of the ball, but we stayed composed. Everyone did their work, kept their shape and believed we would get chances.”

The 24-year-old also pointed to the collective spirit developed under Jovanovic, saying Greece’s unity helps bridge any gap in individual resources with leading European nations. He praised the work-rate throughout the team, from goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis through to the attacking line.

Tzolis believes the recent results show Greece can compete with Europe’s strongest international sides.

What happens next

Greece will attempt to make it three wins from three when the Netherlands visit Thessaloniki on Thursday. Tzolis is aiming to retain his place on the left flank after his decisive contribution in Augsburg.

Germany, meanwhile, will seek an immediate response when Serbia travel to Munich on the same night.
