Valencia appoint Javier Aguirre as head coach until end of season
Valencia have appointed Javier Aguirre as first-team head coach on a deal running to the end of the season, with the club holding an option for a further year.
The 67-year-old Mexican, widely known as El Vasco, takes charge with Valencia second from bottom in La Liga after collecting four points from their opening seven matches. He replaces Carlos Corberan, whose departure was confirmed on September 14 following the poor start.
Aguirre takes over during Valencia reset
Aguirre arrives amid wider changes at Mestalla, where the previous coaching group has left and Braulio Vazquez was introduced as sporting director earlier this week. Valencia want the experienced coach to stabilise the side while the club rebuilds its sporting direction.

Aguirre brings extensive La Liga experience from spells with Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca. He led Osasuna into the UEFA Champions League during an earlier spell, while his honours in Mexico include the 1999 Liga title with Pachuca and the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League with Monterrey.
His coaching career has also included roles in Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, as well as work with clubs and national teams in Mexico.
What happens next
- Aguirre is expected to begin training with the Valencia players before his formal introduction.
