The 29-year-old arrives at the Johan Cruyff Arena looking to rebuild his career after a difficult final campaign in north London. Bissouma made only 11 outings for Tottenham and had previously faced disciplinary trouble, including a suspension two years ago following social-media footage that appeared to show him using nitrous oxide.
Ajax have moved for his experience and versatility as they seek greater strength in midfield. Technical director Jordi Cruijff said talks had begun in August, with the club monitoring the player’s position for several months before securing him without a fee.
Cruijff said Ajax had added a player familiar with elite-level football, capable of operating in more than one role, and hoped he could become available quickly.
Bissouma said he was delighted to join a club he regards as one of Europe’s biggest. He added that the move did not come as a surprise after conversations with Ajax figures convinced him by outlining their plans for this season and the years ahead.
What happens next
The midfielder will now work towards match fitness and selection. He has made clear that he wants to compete for every available trophy and believes his experience can also help Ajax’s younger players.
Bissouma said he intends to be approachable within the dressing room, offering advice on football and making himself available to teammates who want guidance.
