The Sims 4 Finally Adds Long-Awaited Auto-Save Feature in July Update

After nearly 12 years on shelves, The Sims 4 is finally preparing to add a feature players have asked for for a long time: automatic saving. EA has also outlined a few other updates coming alongside it, with the first wave arriving on July 21.

The Sims 4 Is Finally Getting AutoSaves

EA’s latest “Laundry List” confirms that an upcoming The Sims 4 update will introduce AutoSave. When the option is turned on, the game will generate save points automatically during key moments—such as when switching lots, hitting certain milestones, or when a player has been in-session for long enough without manually saving.

For players who prefer to stay in full control, EA says there will also be an alternative: a reminder prompt that appears after a set amount of play time, encouraging you to save. In both modes, the timing can be adjusted by players, so you can decide how frequently the game saves or nudges you to do it yourself.

Alongside AutoSave, the Sims 4 “Memory Boost” system—previously available as early access—will also be rolled out to all eligible players at the same time. EA says the feature targets improvements to how The Sims 4 handles memory, aiming to reduce lag and crashes for people who are most likely to run into performance issues. The biggest gains, per EA, are expected for players with large households, heavily decorated lots, and older save files that have been in use for a long period.

Not everyone will be thrilled by the timeline. Waiting a decade for an AutoSave option will feel frustrating to long-time fans, but EA notes that The Sims 4 isn’t alone in experiencing delayed requests for major quality-of-life features. EA points to Minecraft as another long-running game that needed far more time than many expected for a “sit down” action—an addition that took 17 years of community requests.

Player Impact and What Comes After

With automatic saves and time-based prompts, The Sims 4 players should be better protected against the most painful moments: forgetting to save, losing progress after instability, or trying to rebuild a sequence of events after a crash. Since the game can be busy and unpredictable during short windows—especially when players are juggling lots, milestones, and everyday gameplay—more frequent safety points should help prevent important story beats from vanishing.

EA is also already planning the next quality-of-life update. The next scheduled update for The Sims 4 is set for September, where EA says it will focus on Sim autonomy. EA claims Sims will act with more consistent behavior, alongside improved responsiveness. Additional details are expected to be shared closer to the release window, with more information potentially arriving in August or early September.
