Bayern’s 59-Match Scoring Streak Ends in Schalke Draw After Kane Bench Call
Bayern Munich’s 0-0 draw at Schalke ended their 59-match competitive scoring streak, with Harry Kane and Michael Olise both held in reserve before being sent on in the second half at the Veltins-Arena.
Vincent Kompany’s decision to manage the minutes of Kane and Olise became the central Bayern talking point after the champions failed to break through in Gelsenkirchen. Kane replaced Nathaniel Brown at the interval, while Olise entered later for Lennart Karl, but goalkeeper Loris Karius denied both men.
- Kane struck fiercely from range late on, only for Karius to push the effort over the bar.
- Olise also tested Karius from a tight angle after his introduction.
- Schalke did not register a shot, yet their disciplined defending and Karius’s saves preserved the draw.
Kompany said the benching of Kane and Olise was based on workload, pointing to their late return from World Cup holidays and the energy spent in the cup tie at Osnabrück. He insisted it would not be sensible to expect either player to complete every match.
The blank was Bayern’s first in competitive football since their 2-0 Club World Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in July 2025. Their run of scoring in 59 straight matches is now over.
Kompany: Bayern lost their tempo
The Bayern coach said his side needed to sustain pressure for the full game against Schalke’s deep defensive shape. Instead, he felt Bayern repeatedly slowed the match down and never created the continuous intensity required to force an opening.
Kompany praised Schalke’s effort, the atmosphere and their defensive resilience, saying the home team delivered a committed display in a match full of emotion and passion.
What happens next
Bayern begin their Champions League campaign on Thursday when Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt visit the Allianz Arena. Kompany’s side will then return to Bundesliga action, looking to restore their scoring momentum after Karius and Schalke halted it.
