Cristian Romero Captains Argentina to Emotional Cordoba Win Over Bolivia
Cristian Romero marked a homecoming in Cordoba by captaining Argentina to a 4-0 friendly victory over Bolivia and heading in the third goal at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium.
The 28-year-old centre-back wore the armband in his hometown, 10 years after beginning his senior career with local side Belgrano. Romero struck in the 53rd minute, rising at the far post to convert Nico Paz’s corner beyond Bolivia goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra.
Lautaro Martinez, Paz and Jose Lopez were also on target as Argentina controlled the friendly and completed a clean-sheet win.
Romero embraces Argentina captaincy role
Romero said the occasion will stay with him after being trusted with Argentina’s third-captain responsibility by head coach Lionel Scaloni and the squad’s established leaders.
“It is a day I will remember forever,” Romero said. “I could not have imagined, when I began at Belgrano, that 10 years later I would return after winning everything with the national team. Scaloni told me some time ago that I would be third captain, and now I have to take on that responsibility.”
The defender praised the coaching staff and the atmosphere within the group, insisting Argentina have the tools to remain among the leading international sides. He also underlined the importance of senior players helping the younger members of the squad through the current transition.
