Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina’s opener as Lionel Scaloni’s side swept Bolivia aside 4-0 in Cordoba to begin their three-match home friendly programme.

The Inter Milan forward struck in the 15th minute at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium, meeting Alexis Mac Allister’s precise pass before guiding a finish into the far corner. Nico Paz, Cristian Romero and Jose Lopez added the remaining goals in a one-sided win.

Martinez underlines Argentina standards

Martinez, 29, said the squad’s drive has not faded despite the success already enjoyed by many of its senior players on the international stage.

“It is always a great feeling to wear this shirt,” Martinez said. “This is a new stage and a new moment. Those of us who have played in World Cups can bring our experience, but when we come together the energy remains unchanged.”

The striker said Argentina’s established internationals have a responsibility to help younger players settle into the group, highlighting emerging talents including Paz and Leonel Flores.

He also praised Scaloni for keeping the competition for places high throughout the squad, with Martinez determined to continue his scoring run and hold on to his place at centre-forward.

What happens next

Argentina will recover in Cordoba before facing Burkina Faso on Thursday in the second match of the home window. Scaloni’s team then close the series against Benin.

Martinez said the remaining fixtures will carry added emotion for both the players and home supporters as Argentina continue to blend experienced World Cup campaigners with the next generation.

Bolivia, meanwhile, will regroup ahead of their upcoming international commitments.
