Cyan Worlds Cancels Project Anglerfish Prototype in “A Path Not Taken” Video
Cyan Worlds has pulled the plug on its long-in-development prototype, Project Anglerfish, with the studio saying the effort won’t move forward “for a variety of reasons.” The announcement came in a short video titled “A path not taken: Project Anglerfish,” posted July 26 on Cyan’s YouTube channel.
In the three-minute clip, Development Director Hannah Gamiel and Creative Director Eric A. Anderson explained that the prototype work took place “over a year ago.” Cyan said the team spent roughly four months building a new prototype set in the Myst universe.
Even though the project is being discontinued, the video includes a teaser trailer that was originally intended only for “publisher eyes.” Cyan also emphasized that it remains proud of the work the team completed, despite deciding not to take the prototype further.
What the Project Anglerfish teaser showed
The teaser leans into the series’ signature eerie tone. It depicts a traveler moving into a book, arriving at a destination referred to as an “Age.” From there, the content centers on collecting another book for a mysterious figure described as a deceptively plucky green-cloaked man.
Visually, the trailer shifts between environments that feel clean and elegant and settings that turn ruinous and increasingly horror-leaning. Cyan’s team framed the result as a glimpse of an experience that could have delivered several hours of adventure and puzzles.
What Cyan is working on instead
While Project Anglerfish won’t proceed, Cyan said it is still “hard at work on other new Myst universe things,” adding that there’s more to come.
For now, Myst players are pointed back to the studio’s existing updates—specifically Myst’s 2021 remake and the Age of Rime update—as the next chapter of content in the meantime.
