God of War Prime Video Series Pauses After Ryan Hurst Injury Forces Recast
Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have paused production on Prime Video’s upcoming God of War television adaptation after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a serious injury while filming his role as Kratos. The setback, which occurred in late June during work on the video game adaptation, has forced the production to recast Kratos and adjust the schedule to keep the project on track.
Why Prime Video’s God of War show halted
Production on the God of War series had been underway since late February. Hurst had been filming for months and reportedly added about 40 lbs of muscle to prepare for the role. During a stunt for the series, he tore a bicep, then underwent surgery and entered recovery.
The injury is expected to require a recovery window of four to six months, with full strength potentially taking up to a year. Because of the physical demands tied to playing Kratos, the series likely cannot safely resume filming with Hurst until mid-to-late 2027 at the earliest.
What the production team decided
With deadlines already locked in, the production reportedly couldn’t absorb the length of the delay. As a result, the show has moved forward by recasting Kratos rather than waiting for Hurst’s return.
When filming is expected to restart
Shooting is expected to resume in mid-October. No casting replacement for Kratos has been announced yet.
Will scenes need to be redone?
Because production continuity matters, the show is expected to require reshoots from the beginning. This includes altering earlier takes due to appearance changes, including for Atreus, portrayed by child actor Callum Vinson, whose look would likely differ too much between versions.
