Rafael Leao Praises Jorge Jesus After Portugal’s Win Over Norway
Rafael Leao has hailed Portugal’s new defensive edge under Jorge Jesus after the national team’s hard-earned win over Norway, saying the side now has the resilience required to close out major matches.
Leao said Portugal remained organised despite Norway enjoying long spells on the ball, with Jesus quickly improving the team’s work both in open play and at set pieces. The 72-year-old, formerly in charge of Benfica and Sporting CP, has taken over from Roberto Martinez with a clear focus on strengthening the back line.
“The biggest change is the defensive strength the coach has brought,” Leao said. “Norway had plenty of possession, but we stayed compact throughout, defended properly in play and from dead-ball situations. We already had attacking talent; the defensive side was what we needed in the biggest games.”
Leao reunited with former Sporting coach
The Portugal winger is working again with the coach who gave him his senior debut at Sporting CP. Leao believes that existing relationship can help him make a major impact in Jesus’ new setup, wherever he is selected.
He said Jesus had put his ideas in place rapidly after arriving in the Portugal camp, adding that the manager understands his physical condition, tactical profile and mentality.
“He organised the team very well in only a few days,” Leao said. “He gave me my first professional opportunity and knows me well. I will work for the team in any role, and I am confident he can help me show what I can do.”
Felix praised after international form
Leao also backed Joao Felix, who has responded strongly for Portugal after facing criticism over his Saudi Pro League move. The forward has found the net in recent international matches and has become one of the side’s key performers.
“Joao has been decisive,” Leao said. “He received a lot of criticism, but he is proving his quality. Some people say he only does it in Saudi Arabia, yet he is making the difference in Europe with Portugal.”
Galatasaray target fifth straight title
Leao has also begun a new club chapter after leaving AC Milan for Galatasaray during the summer transfer window. He said the Istanbul club’s sporting plan and determination to sign him convinced him to make the move.
“Turkey is a very competitive league with many big players,” he said. “Galatasaray showed they really wanted me and presented a strong project. I believe we can win a fifth consecutive league title this season.”
