Final Fantasy XIV: Everwcold Details Revealed at Berlin Fan Fest
Final Fantasy XIV’s second Fan Festival has brought a fresh wave of details about the game’s next major expansion, Everwcold, including a new extended trailer, concrete information on its next main tank job, changes to how progression and content scaling will work, and a set of major Final Fantasy VII crossovers. The expansion’s setting centers on enormous skyfaring ships meant to escape the frost below, with multiple themed “realmship” zones and new systems designed to reduce friction for returning and progressing players.
New Evercold trailer confirms both new jobs and the expansion’s sky-ship setting
The event opened with an updated Everwcold trailer that showcased what appear to be both of the expansion’s new jobs. One of them is shown using magic through an item held by a small Miqote child, while the teased tank role is depicted with Magitek-style shield weapons. The story segment then followed with more specifics: the expansion takes place across multiple massive ships that have risen into the sky to avoid the frost below, and each ship carries an elemental theme such as water or fire.
New characters will appear as part of the expansion’s arc, including a character tied to the upcoming main tank job.
Bastion is the next tank job
Squarely focused on job details next, the tank role has been officially named Bastion. It is described as the game’s main tank option within the expansion’s play framework, and it will be introduced under the game’s “Evolved Mode.” Bastion will start at level 90, will use the weapon Skyltborg, and the quest to begin the job will be found in Limsa Lominsa.
The festival also reiterated that more information about the promised ranged physical job will come later at the Tokyo Fan Fest this year.
Two realmships, a new player town, and story-critical crystals
Gameplay footage then highlighted a new zone under active development: Naglfar, The Realmship of Water. The area is presented with a distinct Nordic fantasy look, and the team says it is experimenting with new approaches to area design. In the middle of the ship, the trailer and presentation pointed to a crystal called the Arkcrystal, framed as a key story element—styled like a more ornate version of the Aetheryte.
Naglfar will also host the game’s first player town planned for future AFK time. That town is named Falgarthr, and the festival included brief footage of the settlement along with new music for the region.
A second realmship was also revealed: Hringhorni, The Realmship of Fire. This area leans heavily into an industrial theme with furnaces and lava, and a protective dome overhead that gives the sky its distinctive coloration. The presentation emphasized that even though the expansion is centered around frost, the ships will deliver variety—while also noting that these ship-top zones are planned to be the same size as prior expansion fields, and sometimes larger.
Progression and scaling overhaul targets player choice
Beyond zones and jobs, the festival delivered a detailed look at how Everwcold will change key systems. On the MSQ front, the onboarding process will act as a gate: after players complete the onboarding quest, the expansion will be opened up so players can visit different areas in different orders. The story outcome will still converge back to the same end point, even if routes differ.
To address concerns about leveling and mismatch pacing, Evercold introduces Auto Content Balancing. This system is meant to allow players to enter dungeons at different job levels regardless of where they are in the story, with enemies being scaled based on level. The team asked players to trust the approach despite the apparent level flexibility.
Dungeon rewards are also being adjusted to offer more freedom in how players progress, with implications that item level may shift based on the new structure. However, the changes are limited to select fields and instanced dungeons being added in version 8.0, rather than applying broadly across the entire game.
Character action skins arrive in phases
Another major topic was character action skins, which change the animation for certain actions. The festival confirmed that skins will cover both general actions—such as teleport—and job actions used in combat. General action skins are planned for the expansion’s launch, while job action skins will be added later in patch 8.1. Footage at the event demonstrated different teleport animation styles, including one with a frosty look and another that leans into Reaper-themed vibes.
Customization expands again in 8.0 and 8.1
The event also continued the customization story from the prior Fan Fest. A wave of new customization options arrives in 8.0, with even more added in 8.1. Much of the update is described as race-based, including changes for Viera and Lalafell that remove black darkening around the nose and remove Miqote war paint. The festival further stated that both male and female Aura will be able to mix and match horns with additional horn options tied to face types.
Quality-of-life updates for travel and “World Raids”
On the content structure side, the team described improvements to fields and quest systems. A new system is planned for underutilized areas under the banner of “World Raids” (the name may change), with limited detail provided at the festival. Quest design is also getting a major usability upgrade: players will be able to auto-travel between quests. The festival noted that this will be rolled out in stages and applied retroactively to earlier expansions and quests.
A new raid difficulty bridges Normal and Savage
Raid options are expanding too. Evercold will add a third difficulty tier for raids positioned as a stepping stone between Normal and Savage. The presentation also explained how rewards will function for existing Savage players: this new tier will provide upgrade paths for gear to help players get closer to Savage-equivalent strength. Importantly, players who only want Savage will not be required to complete this additional difficulty to unlock Savage raids.
Same-region matchmaking starts in Japan
Party finder experience is set to improve with same-region player matchmaking. The system will launch first in Japan on October 12, followed by a 24-hour testing window. After issues are ironed out, it will expand to other regions as soon as possible.
Chocobo companions gain dungeon roles and breeding changes
Chocobos are also getting a sweeping overhaul. Players will be able to bring Chocobos into instanced dungeons, and two players will be able to bring two Chocobos total to form a light party. Dungeons will be balanced around the Chocobos’ level and role.
Chocobo breeding is also being reworked, including changes to summoning behavior such as the effect of Gyshal Greens and a redesign of Basic Commands. The festival also stated that a player’s current Chocobo level will carry over, and that these breeding changes will be implemented after Evercold launches in patch 8.1.
Final Fantasy VII takes over the 8-player raid and Gold Saucer
Everwcold’s new 8-player raid theme was revealed as a Final Fantasy VII crossover. Titled Beyond the Lifestream, the raid series is planned to arrive in line with the release of Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, set for the start of 2027. The raid series will include three tiers starting in 8.01, along with three corresponding difficulties. The story for the raid will be overseen by Nojima, and character designs will be handled by Nomura.
In addition, the festival announced a surprise Gold Saucer update themed around Final Fantasy VII. The Gold Saucer setting from Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth will be added to Final Fantasy XIV’s Gold Saucer, and a new attraction called Keybound Brawler is scheduled for October 28. The attraction is described as a typing game where players type Final Fantasy VII-related terms to defeat enemies. The Gold Saucer will continue to be updated after launch, with the implication of additional minigames over time.
FF7-themed rewards are part of the event as well, including unlocks for Barrett and Tifa outfits, and Barrett’s machine gun arm as a Fashion Accessory.
Collector’s Edition physical and digital items confirmed
With the expansion comes a new Collector’s Edition package. Physical items shown include a statue of the Warrior of Light depicted as a Reaper, a keychain based on the Aethos, a plush of an NPC race called the Kottr, a tapestry titled around the Fourth, and a box featuring art by Amano. Digital inclusions are listed as a set of Crystal Skyltborg, a new mount called Valhallar Odin from Final Fantasy XIII, and an Entreat Crystal emote.
The next major keynote for Evercold is slated to take place later this year in Tokyo on October 31 and November 1, following the Berlin Fan Festival announcements.
